New release provides hybrid multi-cloud enablement, developer cloud enablement, extended support for Citrix XenApp and announces AppCloaking

Citrix Synergy 2014

SANTA CLARA, Calif.--(April 29, 2014)--CloudVolumes, the company that virtualizes everything above the OS, today introduced CloudVolumes 2.0 to enhance the deployment and management of workloads and applications. Users will now be able to instantly provision workloads to cloud providers, while developers can easily test and deploy their application stacks. CloudVolumes 2.0 also adds enhanced support for Citrix XenApp. CloudVolumes is also announcing an upcoming capability called AppCloaking, which will give customers additional flexibility to deploy multiple applications inside a single stack and expose applications per user based on policy. CloudVolumes will be demonstrating the new release at Citrix Synergy at the Anaheim Convention Center, May 6-8, 2014, in booth #517.

“Organizations are realizing the benefits of the cloud and making the transition quickly; however, this introduces complexity into the management of applications, as the processes are likely to change in a new environment,” said Paul Burns, president, Neovise. “Enterprises need a product that can help them deploy their applications in the cloud without a major infrastructure overhaul, and developers need help testing and rapidly deploying application stacks. CloudVolumes provides the advanced management required for these environments, while minimizing the resources required to make the transition.”

“Our push button data center and cloud vision will continue to drive game changing innovation that reshapes how IT operates through simplification, with increased virtualization,” said Raj Parekh, CEO, CloudVolumes.

Simplifying the Application Management and Deployment Lifecycle

CloudVolumes 2.0 offers:

Hybrid Multi-Cloud Enablement: CloudVolumes will now cloud-enable customers by allowing them to instantly provision workloads to cloud providers, such as AWS and Azure, enabling hybrid cloud use cases. Users will be able to seamlessly move from their data center to the cloud.

Developer Cloud Enablement: CloudVolumes will enable developers to instantly test and deploy application stacks, driving more efficient resource utilization through increased virtualization. Labor spent building and supporting development and test environments will be reduced, as well as defects and the costs of custom configurations.

Citrix XenApp support: CloudVolumes’ simplified virtual appliance now works with XenApp to enable support for both Citrix XenDesktop/XenApp and VMware Horizon deployments. IT and service providers will now be able to offer users a rich choice of applications, cost effectively, differentiating their service offering with instant delivery.

“With over 15,000 students, managing applications and their deployment can be a very daunting task, especially without a major infrastructure overhaul,” said Lucien Haak, team leader workplaces, Maastricht University. “CloudVolumes enables us to easily manage our complex desktop applications, so that we can rapidly deploy them to our students and faculty. Since it requires no modifications to existing applications, it is easy to implement and also reduces our software and hardware requirements, which helps us save on costs.”

Easily Deploy Multiple Applications Inside a Single Application Stack

AppCloaking, a soon to be released capability, will be introduced across the CloudVolumes family of products and will provide users with the flexibility to deploy multiple applications inside a single volume, instantly delivering applications only to entitled users. This unique approach will simplify deployment for users who want a golden image and single volume containing many applications, while avoiding the cost of delivering and managing large base images and simply hiding applications within them, which significantly limits agility.

"Our white label desktop-as-a-service platform provides GPU intensive software vendors with an instant cloud offering and more, enabling users to remotely access their desktop from any device and location with a native user experience," said Benny Willen, CEO, Cloudalize. "With CloudVolumes, we can give our users this native experience, just as they would have on their physical desktop, without needing to change their profile or behavior. With a single point of deployment and control, it's easy for us to manage applications while optimizing performance for users."

“As we work with customers, we uncover more use cases that show the need for Software Defined Workload™ management solutions that simplify lifecycle management in a cloud and virtualized world,” said Harry Labana, SVP and chief product officer, CloudVolumes. “Our goal is to enable a push button- everything data center and cloud to provide customers with flexibility when it comes to their diverse workloads, so they are able to easily deliver them across heterogeneous infrastructures, at scale, increasing efficiency and saving on costs.”

Interoperates with VMware Horizon 6 for easy application management, user personalization and instant provisioning, and adds published application support

SANTA CLARA, Calif.--(April 9, 2014)--CloudVolumes, the company that virtualizes everything above the OS, today announced CloudVolumes for Horizon, which will simplify the management of applications, personalization of user experience and dynamic provisioning for all Horizon 6 virtual desktop types. Interoperable with VMware Horizon, this solution will be delivered as a simple easy to use CloudVolumes Virtual Appliance available on VMware’s Virtual Appliance Marketplace. IT will now have high performance, native and ThinApp application management for both VDI and published application virtual desktop environments, while saving on costs like storage, networking and compute. Horizon users will be able to install their own applications and have those apps, user settings and profile roam with them within a persistent or non-persistent desktop environment, providing management cost savings while retaining a persistent user experience. IT will be able to instantly provision services to any Horizon 6 desktop to enable a best in class user experience and will also be able to provision workloads into generic RDSH pools to eliminate the need for silos of applications servers.

“VMware Horizon 6 can increase IT efficiency by providing advanced management for desktop provisioning,” said Erik Frieberg, vice president, Marketing, End-User Computing, VMware. “CloudVolumes enables us to extend our application management tools so that users can easily manage their entire lifecycle, while having the ability to lower costs through pooled virtual machines while users continue to have a persistent look and feel. Through this collaboration, IT can manage applications all through a single point of administration.”

VMware Horizon 6 will simplify desktop and application management, while increasing security and control for IT. This enables companies to experience agility of desktop services and experience high availability, which gives users the freedom to access desktops and applications from a variety of devices and locations.

CloudVolumes for Horizon is built to manage the entire lifecycle of an application, from initial installation and updates, to seamless replacement. The CloudVolumes Virtual Appliance for Horizon enables central management of all applications and also provides the option for having a single copy of the workload across all virtual machines. CloudVolumes eliminates the need for any packaging, modification and streaming for applications when provisioned, and they are made availably dynamically for the user to access immediately upon login. Additionally, Horizon 6 users will be able to have the ability to install their own applications, and have their user settings retained even while using a non-persistent desktop.

“We have worked with VMware to provide an entirely new experience, which enables user-time-to-productivity through a faster and easier virtual desktop manager for IT,” said Harry Labana, SVP and chief product officer, CloudVolumes. “With CloudVolumes for Horizon, users will experience native performance while IT can manage applications dynamically across multiple data centers, clouds, devices and environments. We will enable customers to lower costs by reducing software and hardware requirements, and streamlining their entire application management process.”

With over 20 years of experience in the enterprise technology industry, Labana will focus on product development, evolution, strategy and marketing, positioning CloudVolumes for accelerated growth and continuing to meet the developing needs of customers.

“At CloudVolumes, we are fundamentally changing the way applications and workloads are managed. In the new cloud era, we see huge market opportunities on the horizon to enable a seamless customer experience while building a bridge between data centers and the cloud. To continue our success we must continue to expand the use cases of our technology, focus on the expansion of relationships with Fortune 1000 customers and major strategic partners. Given this, we must also further strengthen our leadership team to capture this market opportunity,” said Raj Parekh, president and CEO of CloudVolumes. “I am delighted to have a leader of Harry’s caliber join our team. He brings a unique combination of enterprise customer experience, software CTO experience and market insight to CloudVolumes. He is widely regarded as an industry thought leader and I am confident our customers will enjoy collaborating with him as well.”

Prior to joining CloudVolumes, Labana was the CTO and vice president of product management at AppSense, where he chaired the CTO office to form the company’s strategic technical direction. During his time with the company, AppSense grew by 46 percent and Labana led the diversification of its product portfolio. Prior to AppSense, Labana was CTO and vice president of the desktop division at Citrix, where he helped to define the roadmap for Citrix’s $1 billion flagship product line and was responsible for driving and evangelizing the company’s overall technology direction. Prior to Citrix, Labana had a long tenure at Goldman Sachs where he was a vice president in the technology division.

“I’ve known CloudVolumes and its co-founders Shaun Coleman and Matt Conover since the company’s inception and have keenly followed their progress as the technology and market fit have been refined successfully with customers,” said Labana. “The company takes an unprecedented approach that enables new levels of customer agility, while driving consistency, reducing variability and enabling resilient secure infrastructures at lower costs than traditional data center architectures. The market opportunity is substantial, and I am looking forward to joining the team and helping our customers solve infrastructure issues with an elegant approach that simplifies their lives.”

Labana was granted a US patent for enterprise mobility in 2013 and was recognized by CRN as a “Top 25 Disruptor” in 2012. He holds a bachelor’s degree in electronic systems engineering with honors from the University of Manchester and has completed the finance for senior executives program at Harvard Business School. Most recently Labana has consulted for a major hedge fund in Westport Connecticut, advised numerous startups including Workspot and Atlantis Computing as well as consulted for several private equity firms.

By most accounts I've read, the desktop virtualization market is not growing at expected rates. As a result, the big players in the space have made a strong shift towards mobile. However, this new revenue—even if growing fast—is a fraction of the more mature desktop virtualization market.

I believe this lack of growth explains Citrix's decision to bring back the XenApp brand (to stimulate mid-market growth), and to acquire Framehawk (to expand use cases by enabling remoting over mobile networks). It also explains VMware's bet on DaaS by picking up Desktone (an attempt to carve out an adjacent DaaS market), as it’s too early to count for Amazon and Microsoft.

Despite all this hullaballoo, these recent moves won't accelerate the desktop virtualization market in a material way in the short-to-medium term. However, I do believe they are all valid strategies to sustain current growth rates.
